Westcliff on Sea - St Alban the Martyr

Locked with no keyholder I found St Alban intriguing and was deceived into thinking that the fabric, or at least parts of it, were old. It's not but is a really good example of its time (turn of the last century).

ST ALBAN, St John’s Road, Westcliff. An early and very interesting work of Sir Charles Nicholson, or rather at that time Nicholson &  Corlette: 1898-1908. Flint and rubble with red brick dressings, SE lady chapel visible outside by two gables and large Dec windows below. The altar is in a special narrower extension which lies at the foot of the SE tower of the church. The nave has a spacious six-light W window and arcades with chamfered square piers. The roof is prettily painted. Rood-screen and rich Reredos. - FONT. From St Mary-le-Bow in London; found there in the crypt by Sir Charles Nicholson and bought by him. Octagonal stem with large leaves going up its lower part, bowl with thick flutings.

St Alban the Martyr (5)

As previously noted Mee missed Westcliff on Sea.
